American Policing in Crisis with Anthony Barksdale (S2 Ep.19)
11 June 2021
My guest today is Anthony Barksdale. Anthony Barksdale was the Acting Commissioner of the Baltimore Police Department from 2007 to 2012 and has worked at various levels of policing as well as with the FBI. He’s now also a commentator for CNN. We talked about the national conversation on policing and racism, the shooting of Ma’Khia Bryant, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and how Martial Arts training could prevent the need for cops to use deadly force, the possibility of substituting cops with mental health professionals, the shooting of Rayshard Brooks and when it makes sense to let suspects flee a crime scene, the Ferguson effect and the current mass retirement of police officers, the defund movement, the psychological dynamic between an officer and a suspect during a routine traffic stop and much more.
